Truck wreck lawyer in San Antonio: I-35, I-10 and the loops where freight meets city traffic

Truck Accident Lawyers SATX is the website of LAWBOSS – Uvalle Law Firm, PLLC, whose San Antonio office is in Fountainhead Tower on I-10. San Antonio sits where the freight coming north from the Mexican border on I-35 meets the east-west traffic of I-10, with two loops and several highways carrying trucks through the city. This page is about those roads, what the state’s own figures say about truck crashes in Bexar County, and what happens after a wreck on one of them.

In brief

TxDOT counted 2,684 crashes involving a commercial motor vehicle in Bexar County in 2024; 18 people died in them and 46 suffered suspected serious injuries. Much of the truck traffic comes up I-35 from the Laredo region, which TxDOT says handled more than six of every ten commercial trucks crossing the Texas-Mexico border in 2024.

I-35: the trade corridor from Laredo

I-35 begins at Laredo on the border and runs north through San Antonio toward Austin and Dallas. TxDOT’s border trade summary reports that more than six out of every ten commercial trucks crossing the Texas-Mexico border in 2024 passed through the Laredo Region, and calls Laredo’s World Trade Bridge the busiest commercial crossing on the U.S.-Mexico border. A large share of those trucks travel I-35 through the south side of San Antonio, past downtown and out through the northeast toward Live Oak, Schertz and New Braunfels.

For a crash case, cross-border freight brings its own questions. The carrier may be based in Mexico or in another state, the trailer may belong to a different company from the tractor, and the load may have changed hands at a yard near the border. The lease, the bills of lading and the broker’s records show who was responsible for the truck and the load on the day of the crash.

The I-35 NEX construction zone

On the northeast side, TxDOT’s I-35 NEX Central project is building three elevated lanes in each direction, two main lanes and one high-occupancy vehicle lane, along 9.5 miles of I-35 from I-410 North to FM 3009, with completion estimated for late 2027. A truck crash in a work zone can bring in the construction contractor and the traffic control plan for that stretch, as well as the truck’s driver and carrier.

I-10: east and west across Texas

I-10 crosses San Antonio from west to east, linking El Paso and the West Texas oil country with Houston and the Gulf Coast. Northwest of the city it runs out through the Hill Country toward Boerne; east of downtown it heads toward Seguin. Long-haul trucks on I-10 cover long distances between cities, which makes the driver’s hours a first question. Under 49 CFR 395.3 a property-carrying driver may drive no more than 11 hours within a 14-hour window after 10 hours off duty.

Loop 410, Loop 1604 and the highways in between

  • Loop 410 rings the inner city and connects I-35, I-10, I-37, US 281 and US 90. Trucks change highways at its interchanges, and lane changes and merges around those ramps are where sideswipes and rollovers happen.
  • Loop 1604 circles the outer city through fast-growing neighborhoods, with commercial traffic serving warehouses and construction sites mixing with commuters.
  • I-37 runs southeast from downtown toward Corpus Christi and the coast.
  • US 281 runs north toward the airport area and the Hill Country and south out of the city.
  • US 90 runs west out of the city.

Oilfield traffic from the Eagle Ford

The Railroad Commission of Texas lists the counties affected by the Eagle Ford Shale, a formation it describes as roughly 50 miles wide and 400 miles long, running from the Mexican border into East Texas. Atascosa and Wilson counties, both next to Bexar County, are on that list, along with Karnes, Frio, McMullen, La Salle and others south and east of the city. Oilfield work means tank trucks, sand haulers, water trucks and equipment on highways and rural roads leading toward San Antonio. Tank trucks hauling oil or hazardous materials are subject to higher federal insurance minimums under 49 CFR 387.9.

What TxDOT’s figures show for Bexar County

TxDOT publishes each year a count of crashes involving a commercial motor vehicle, by county, built from the Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports (form CR-3) it has received. Its 2024 report, with data as of April 9, 2025, gives these figures:

CountyCrashes involving a commercial motor vehiclePeople killedSuspected serious injuries
Bexar2,6841846
Comal (New Braunfels)205510
Guadalupe (Seguin, Schertz)423214
Texas, all counties39,3936081,601

These counts include every kind of commercial motor vehicle in a crash, not only tractor-trailers, and they cover only crashes an officer reported. They do not say who was at fault. They do show that truck crashes in Bexar County are an everyday event, not a rare one.

After a wreck on these roads

Depending on where the wreck happened, the investigating officer may be from the San Antonio Police Department, a county sheriff’s office, a suburban city’s police or the Texas Department of Public Safety. Under Transportation Code section 550.062, an officer who investigates a collision that caused injury, death or apparent property damage of 1,000 dollars or more must make a written report and file it electronically with TxDOT within 10 days.

TxDOT sells copies through its Crash Report Online Purchase System: 6 dollars for a regular copy and 8 dollars for a certified copy. Under Transportation Code section 550.065 the report is released to people directly concerned in the crash, including anyone involved, their authorized representatives and the owners of damaged vehicles. Our guide after a truck accident explains what to do at the scene and how to read the report.

Where seriously injured people are taken

San Antonio has two Level I trauma centers, which serve the city and the counties around it. University Hospital reports that its adult and pediatric Level I trauma centers were both reverified by the American College of Surgeons and that the Texas Department of State Health Services redesignated it as a Level I trauma center through July 1, 2029. Brooke Army Medical Center is the only Level I trauma center in the Department of War; the Army describes it as one of two Level I trauma centers serving San Antonio and 22 surrounding counties, and reports that about 85 percent of its trauma admissions are civilians.

If you or a family member is in the hospital after a truck wreck, the claim can wait for the first days of treatment. The evidence cannot always wait, so a family member can call us while you are being treated.

Questions people ask

How many truck crashes happen in Bexar County?

TxDOT’s 2024 county report counts 2,684 crashes involving a commercial motor vehicle in Bexar County, with 18 people killed and 46 suspected serious injuries, based on crash reports processed as of April 9, 2025.

Who investigates a truck crash on I-35 or I-10?

It depends on where it happened: San Antonio police inside the city, a sheriff’s office or suburban police elsewhere, or the Texas Department of Public Safety. The officer files a CR-3 crash report with TxDOT within 10 days.

How do I get the crash report?

Through TxDOT’s Crash Report Online Purchase System: 6 dollars for a regular copy, 8 dollars for a certified copy. People directly concerned in the crash, such as anyone involved and their representatives, can obtain it.

The truck was from Mexico or another state. Can I still bring a claim here?

A carrier that runs trucks on Texas roads must follow the safety rules and carry insurance, wherever it is based. Where the case is filed and against whom depends on the facts; we work that out from the carrier’s registration, the lease and the load paperwork.

Does a crash in the I-35 construction zone change anything?

It can add parties. Besides the truck driver and carrier, the construction contractor and the traffic control plan for the work zone may be part of the investigation.
